What to Do if Your AED Doesn’t Deliver a Shock

If your AED analyses the patient’s heart rhythm and does not deliver a shock, this is not a malfunction. It means the device has detected a non-shockable rhythm — such as asystole (flatline) or pulseless electrical activity (PEA). In these cases, a shock will not help and the device is working correctly.

What you should do: Continue CPR immediately. Follow the voice prompts from your AED — it will guide you through the next steps and will re-analyse the rhythm after each two-minute cycle. Keep going until paramedics arrive.

If you believe your device has genuinely malfunctioned, call Defibshop on 1300 729 575 or visit our AED servicing page.
