Australia’s Leading Defibrillator Store!

Do You Need Training to Use an AED?

No — you do not need formal training to use an AED. Every AED sold in Australia is designed to be used by an untrained bystander. The device guides you through every step using clear voice prompts and visual indicators. It will tell you where to place the pads, when to stand clear, and when to deliver a shock. It will not allow a shock to be delivered unless it detects a shockable rhythm.

The Australian Resuscitation Council and the law support bystander use of AEDs. Good Samaritan protections apply in every Australian state and territory — meaning you are legally protected when acting in good faith to help someone in cardiac arrest.

That said, training makes a real difference:

  • Trained responders act faster and with more confidence under pressure
  • Training ensures correct pad placement and compression technique
  • Practicing with your specific device means no hesitation in an emergency
  • Many workplace WHS frameworks recommend or require regular AED training
Tip: Defibshop stocks AED training units for all major brands — allowing your team to practise with the exact device on your wall without using real pads or battery. Browse training units here, or call us on 1300 729 575.
