A defibrillator — also known as a PAD (Public Access Defibrillator) or AED (Automated External Defibrillator) — is designed to be used by anyone. You do not need medical training. Every public-access defibrillator talks and coaches you through the entire event, from the very first steps right through until paramedics arrive.

The Basic Steps — What Every AED Will Guide You Through

Step Action
1 Stay calm and call for help. Send someone to call 000 immediately and retrieve the nearest AED. Do both at the same time if possible.
2 Follow DRSABCD. Check for Danger, Response, Send for help, Airway, Breathing, then begin CPR and Defibrillation.
3 Turn on the AED. Most units power on automatically when opened. The device will begin speaking to you immediately.
4 Apply the pads as instructed. The AED will tell you exactly where to place the electrode pads — diagrams are printed on the pads themselves.
5 Let the AED analyse. Stand clear and do not touch the patient. The device will assess the heart rhythm and determine whether a shock is needed.
6 Deliver the shock if advised. The AED will tell you clearly if a shock is required and prompt you to press the button. Stand clear before doing so.
7 Continue CPR as directed. After the shock the AED will guide you to resume CPR and will continue to coach you until paramedics take over.

The most important thing to remember:

Just listen to the machine. The AED will tell you everything you need to do. You cannot shock someone accidentally — the device will only advise a shock when the heart rhythm requires one.

Does Every AED Work the Same Way?

The steps above apply to all public-access defibrillators — but each brand and model has its own unique features, interface and voice prompts. All AEDs sold through the Defibshop come with resources and instructions to help you become familiar with your specific unit. Training videos for each model are also available on this website.

And of course, our team is available at any time if you have questions about the device you have purchased — before, during or after an event.
